The Continental Divide in the U.S. is a high ridge line—mostly tracing the crest of the Rocky Mountains—that determines which ocean water flows toward. Water flowing west of the Divide drains into the Pacific Ocean, while water flowing to the east ends up heading toward the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
